H.265 will surely become the mainstream video codec soon. Nowadays H.265/HEVC is widely used to shoot 4K recordings by many professional cameras such as Samsung NX1, Sony PMW-F55, Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4, BlackMagic Ursa, etc. Have some H.265 videos and want to edit them in Adobe Premiere but only found can’t work with H.265 file in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4/CS5/CS3/CS6/CC:
“I know that Premiere is h.265 compatible, but apparently not with DJIs version. It won’t import. Any work arounds?”
Jun 05, 2017 H.265 is only available in hardware in the Kaby Lake CPUs. It's not present in the Skylake CPUs. Building a software encoder is ok but it'll be demanding in terms of CPU and therefore battery life in comparison to the same job in done with a native Kaby Lake CPU. I suppose a 15' 2016 Macbook Pro could have GPU assisted encoding. Video Editing software still have to license the patents to use the H.265 codec. For those people who wish to break all those limitations, we highly recommend you to download our powerful and simple to use H.265/HEVC encoder decoder software - Pavtube iMedia Converter for Mac. Super fast speed to encode H.265 video from Blu-ray/DVD/video.
“I decided to give a trial a shot of adobe premiere pro, I have never used it before (coming from sony vegas). But it won’t import any of my h265 files that were recorded from my drone footage (DJI). These are the raw files from the drone, have not been transcoded or touched. When I try to import them it says “unsuported format or damaged file”. I can import h264 recorded footage from the same drone without issue. Any ideas?”

It is officially stated that H.265/HEVC is supported by Adobe Premiere. Why so many people are encounter problems when working with H.265 files in Premiere Pro? Read on to find the reasons and the solutions.
Reasons and Solutions for H.265/HEVC Doesn’t work with Premiere Pro
1. Premier supports h.265 files but the P4P h.265 files are not recognized by any of the Adobe apps such as Premiere Pro CS5/CS4. Get the latest version of Adobe Premiere Pro CC. |
2. Adobe is ALWAYS slow on this stuff. Lightroom won’t have the lens corrections in there for 2-3 months, also. You can try DaVinci Resolve. |
3. What’s the format of your HEVC video, MOV format or MP4? The reports are only accepting MP4 not MOV formats. If you shot h.265 in MOV, you can go into the folder where your files are from and edit the name of the file by changing the extension from a .MOV file to a .MP4 extension and accept the change of extension and then drag and drop into Premiere. |
4. When you first try to import HEVC video to Premiere Pro, you need to install the HEVC codec, and by clicking “Ok”, it will do it automatically and then import the video just fine. |
5. You can solve the issue by converting h265 from P4P to Prorres HQ with DJI TRANSCODING TOOLS.https://dl.djicdn.com/downloads/inspire_1/DJI_Transcoding_Tool_v0.9.2.dmg |
6. As stated above, use .mp4 and have an updated version of Premiere. If you have the CC license, it should be up to date already. Older CS versions don’t support H.265. Keep in mind that 4K H.265 footage requires a ridiculous amount of processing power if you want to edit it in its original format, so you might want to create proxies of the clips before you start editing. Unless you have a very high-end PC. |
7. Adobe first started support HEVC in CC2015 so any earlier versions don’t have the codec. When you first try and import a H265 file a message should appear telling you that you need to license the codec . The license is part of Premiere Pro CC but not automatically turned on for every user unless they use it. WHY? there is actually a license fee that Adobe manage for you and it gets activated with your first Import or Export. You need to be connected to the internet for the first time you use it and once you do that you don’t need to be connected to license again unless you re-install or there is a major update. Adobe is always “tweaking” playback with CPU/GPU support. H265 playback is decent in Premiere Pro CC 2017. Lots of people use it as a .265 player – BUT, Encoding takes a longtime. |
Ultimate Solution – Convert H.265/HEVC to MPEG-2 for Premiere Pro
HEVC/H.265 is stuttery and slow to edit, even on a really solid studio-pc. Fortunately, there is an easy and quick solution to fix all the H.265 and Premiere Pro issues. Part 3: What Is HEVC/H.265 Codec?
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding)[1], a video compression standard, is developed to have a higher coding efficiency and improved video quality. With double data compression ratio, HEVC only requires half bitrate to keep the same video quality compared to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. In other words, HEVC delivers better video quality at the same bitrate. Target at next-generation HDTV display and content capture systems, it can support 4K and 8K UHD resolution. >> What You May Be Insterested In: H.265 vs H.264, H.265 vs H.266
The Core Technologies That Make HEVC Codec Stand Out
The reason why HEVC codec owns better compression ratio and same high quality lies in the following core technologies it adopts:
- • Coding tree unit: Subdivides picture into variable sized structures with 64×64 samples (H.264 uses 16×16 ones) to improve coding efficiency.
- • Intra Coding: HEVC intra coding increases the Prediction directivity to 33 and adds Planar Prediction to produce a smooth sample surface.
- • Inter Coding: Motion compensation is used for HEVC inter coding to eliminate redundancy in video sequence.
- • Entropy Coding: HEVC uses the same CABAC algorithm of H.264/AVC High Profile for entropy coding, abandoned CAVLC.
HEVC codec is the software to compress or decompress HEVC video. It can be an encoder for compression only or decoder for decompression only. With H.265 codec, people can create a 4K/8K video or convert HEVC videos to a more compatible format for flawlessly playing on computers or devices.
Part 4: Make Sure Your Device Support HEVC codec.
Now we have better acknowledgment about what is HEVC/H.265 codec. The following issue is that whether your device support HEVC codec or the playback function could be done well by your device.
We could see different attitudes that companies towards this new video codec & its technical deployment. As one of the key participants of the MPEG association, Apple announced its HEVC support to Apple products in the very early stage during the implementation of HEVC/H.265 codec. On the other hand, Google reacting comparatively slow compared to Apple because of the concern that the market share of Google’s VP9 & AV1 codecs could wear away.
In the 2018 Q2 Mobile Overview Report (MOVR), we found the support for hardware-accelerated HEVC decoding is growing among mobile devices. 78% of iPhone and 57% of Android smartphone requests come from devices that support hardware-accelerated HEVC decoding. And still a great number of iOS and Android devices have no support for H.265, which could lead HEVC not playing error.

For personal computer domain, in the year 2015 Nvidia released its GTX 960, from then, all PC installed GTX series or higher Nvidia graphic card will sufficiently support HEVC playback. If you don’t have an Nvidia card, a CPU with Intel i7/ AMD Athlon X4 835 or higher grade CPU will handle the HEVC playback jobs.
Note: If you have installed Windows 10 Fall Creators Update[2], you might be facing HEVC not playing on PCs issues since Microsoft removed inbuilt support for HEVC codec. To play HEVC videos on Windows 10 v1709 and later, you need to download and install HEVC codec manually.
Minimum hardware to decode HEVC on Windows 10:
• Intel 6th generation 'Skylake' or newer CPUs
• AMD 6th generation 'Carizzo' or newer APUs
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950, 960, or newer graphics cards
• AMD Radeon R9 Fury, R9 Fury X, R9 Nano, or newer graphics cards

Common Errors with Inadequate Hardware for HEVC
- 1. 'Video codec is not supported' error message when playing HEVC on Netflix, Movies & TV app, VLC etc.
- 2. The HEVC video plays fine for the first few seconds then it becomes choppy and finally freezes.
- 3. The audio is playing while you see a black screen.
- 4. Your computer goes overheated and the CPU utilisation during playback is around 100%.
5. VLC won't support HVC1 hevc files. - ...
Part 5: Will HEVC Be the Next Mainstream Codec?
You see, more and more videos are encoded in HEVC codec or packaged into HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) format in HEVC. Will HEVC be the next major codec? 6 years after being an international standard, HEVC plays in 17.17% of all browsers tracked by caniuse.com, 78% for iOS devices and 57% for Android. In contrast, H.264 plays in 96.96% of all browsers, while VP9 plays in 86.39%. All these are derived from disastrous royal policy of HEVC, hindering it from accessing market on a large scale.
On the other hand, the momentum of AV1 codec and VVC codec[4] cannot be underestimated.
It's not surprising that AV1 plays in 32.02% of all browsers since both Google and Mozilla are AOMedia members. Meanwhile, in Nov, 2018, Microsoft released the beta AV1 Video Extension, which allows AV1 playback on Windows 10 devices.
![Codec Codec](/uploads/1/1/8/2/118272321/453305717.png)
Being the next-gen (after HEVC) standards-based codec developed jointly by MPEG and the ITU, the quality of VVC codec is 30% bitrate reduction over HEVC at the same perpetual quality. And the BBC found HEVC (HM) and AV1 to be about the same, with VVC (JEM) substantially better than both.
To a great degree, the codec future will be dictated by AV1's royalty-free status. But at present stage, HEVC still plays a crucial part in high compression efficiency.
